Office of Greek Affairs

The Greek Community encourages family involvement

Parent & Family Involvement

Students need support throughout the process of recruitment/rush/intake. Be supportive. Learn as much as you can about Greek life and the membership process.

Allow your student to make his/her decision regarding which chapter to join.

Keep an open mind. Greek life is not for everyone. Greek life today is not like Greek life of yesteryears. Greek students succeed academically at a higher percentage than their non-Greek peers. Additionally, just because you are a Greek alumnus, doesn't mean your student is interested in the opportunity.

Greek communities are different on every campus. Chapters at Iowa State have different programming and leadership from year to year. Your student may feel at home with a specific chapter at Iowa State University, but have a different perspective about that same organization on a different campus.

If your student is having a challenge or question with his/her chapter, encourage them to directly contact the chapter leadership, chapter adviser, Office of Greek Affairs or national office. The Office of Greek Affairs can provide your student with contact information for any of these contacts.

Talk to your student about the financial obligations of Greek life.

Once your student becomes Greek, check with his/her chapter to find out if they have a parent club or specific opportunities for families including Mom's Weekend, Dad's Weekend and Sibling's Weekend.
