Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity Inc. is a historically Latino-Based Fraternity with Multicultural membership. It was founded on April 4, 1986 at the University of Iowa under the ideals of 18 men ranging from various backgrounds. Today, Sigma Lambda Beta is the fastest growing Latino fraternity with chapters from coast to coast. During the Fall of 1992, Brother Alexander "Buddha" Ruiz had the idea of introducing something revolutionary and innovative to the Iowa State campus. During that time, the greek system was a big part of the life at ISU. Brother Buddha then learned about Sigma Lambda Beta, and its focus on promoting the Latino culture... Work started to expand the fraternity into Iowa State, and interest meetings started taking place. Brother Buddha and Brother Flaco were educated by several of the Brothers and Founding Fathers from Alpha Chapter, and in April 12, 1992, their efforts paid up, as they received chapter status from Nationals.
