The Iowa Gamma chapter of Pi Beta Phi was was established at Iowa State in 1877 as the first women's fraternity on campus. Pi Beta Phi moved into the current house at 208 Ash Avenue in 1937. Iowa Gamma was home to Carrie Chapman Catt, a pioneer in the national women's suffrage movement and the namesake behind Catt Hall on ISU’s campus. Today, the women of Iowa Gamma continue to uphold Pi Phi’s strong values while striving to promote friendship, develop women of intellect and integrity, cultivate leadership potential and enrich lives through community service. Pi Beta Phi has a reputation for taking on various leadership roles as well as maintaining membership within various campus organizations, committees, and clubs. Women join various organizations including departmental clubs, campus celebrations (Homecoming and VEISHEA), intramurals, community service (Dance Marathon) and honor societies. Iowa Gamma was the recipient of Pi Beta Phi’s highest chapter honor, the Balfour Cup, in 2002 and continues to receive high acclaims from nationals and the university community for its continued overall excellence.
